Introduction:

In 2024, Connecticut homeowners like yourself have the opportunity to harness the power of the sun while enjoying substantial financial incentives. If you're curious about how solar energy can benefit you and your wallet, you're in the right place. In this blog post, we'll explore the various state tax credits, incentives, and benefits available to Connecticut homeowners, shedding light on the path to a greener and more cost-effective energy solution.

Understanding Connecticut Solar Tax Exemptions

Connecticut homeowners pursuing solar energy enjoy a sales tax exemption and property tax exemption on their solar installations. This dual approach of sales tax and property tax exemptions solidifies Connecticut's dedication to creating a supportive environment for residents to adopt solar technologies, promoting sustainability while easing the financial transition to solar energy. Let's delve into the specifics of these tax exemptions and explore their role in shaping an economically viable and environmentally conscious future for Connecticut:

Solar Energy Equipment Sales Tax Exemption

The Solar Energy Equipment Sales Tax Exemption is a complete exemption on the sales tax for solar energy systems like solar panels, equipment related to these systems and services related to the installation of solar energy systems in the state of Connecticut. This means that when you invest in a solar energy system for your home, you won't be subject to the usual sales tax, resulting in additional savings. This sales tax exemption is yet another compelling reason for Connecticut homeowners to take advantage of the financial perks associated with going solar, making the transition even more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Solar Energy System Property Tax Exemption

Connecticut offers a solar energy system property tax exemption to homeowners who install solar energy systems on their homes.  This property tax break ensures that the increased home value attributed to the solar installation doesn't lead to higher property taxes for the 15 years that follow the installation of the solar energy equipment. To claim this solar energy property tax break, you must submit an application to your local assessor by November 1 of the assessment year. If you make changes to the solar energy system requiring a building permit, you will need to reapply for the property tax exemption.

Connecticut's commitment to making solar technology financially accessible is further reinforced through this property tax exemption, encouraging you to embrace clean energy solutions without the burden of additional taxes.

Additional Connecticut Solar Incentives

In Connecticut, once you go solar you are in for a multitude of financial benefits beyond the Solar Energy Equipment Sales Tax Exemption and the Solar Energy System Property Tax Exemption. The following are  additional Connecticut solar incentives that reinforce the state's position as a leader in fostering a greener and more economically viable future for its residents:

Residential Renewable Energy Solutions Program

Connecticut residents looking to embrace solar energy have a powerful ally in the Residential Renewable Energy Solutions (RRES) Program. The RRES program is an initiative that was established by the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) to encourage the adoption of solar energy. Under the RRES Program, homeowners earn Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) based on the amount of renewable energy their solar energy system generates and are also compensated for both the energy produced by their solar electric system and the associated RECs for a 20 year period. The compensation structure may vary based on the chosen tariff option (Buy-All or Netting).

Under the Buy-All tariff option, homeowners receive a fixed payment for all energy and RECs their solar energy system produces over 20 years, given as on-bill credits with a chance for an annual cash payout. With the Netting tariff option, homeowners are paid the retail electric rate for energy and a fixed rate for RECs, reducing the customer's energy bill.  Additionally, any excess electric energy sent to the electric grid earns on-bill credits. For Netting, REC payments happen every quarter. Whether you choose the Buy-All option for fixed payments over 20 years or the Netting option for on-bill credits, the RRES Program makes going solar in Connecticut not only an eco-friendly choice but also a financially rewarding one.

Understanding the Federal Solar Tax Credit: Residential Clean Energy Credit

The US federal government extends its financial support to Connecticut solar adopters through a federal tax incentive referred to as the Residential clean energy credit. The Residential clean energy credit is a tax incentive that you can claim on their US federal income taxes. It awards Connecticut homeowners with residential dollar installations a tax credit equal to 30% of all the installation costs incurred during the installation of solar energy equipment on their homes.

This means that if the installation cost of your solar energy system was $20,000, then the total amount of Residential clean energy credit you will receive will be $6000 (30% of $20,000 is $6000). The $6000 Residential clean energy credit will reduce your US federal tax liability by $6000.

The sooner you invest in a solar energy system, the greater the amount of federal solar tax credit you will receive given that the financial advantages linked to the Residential Clean Energy Credit diminish over time.

Calculating Your Solar Savings

Having explored the diverse solar incentives that drive solar adoption in Connecticut, let’s now focus on the substantial savings you stand to reap once you make the eco-conscious switch to solar thanks to the Residential Renewable Energy Solutions (RRES) Program and the Residential Clean Energy Credit.

Let’s assume that you installed a $20,0000 solar energy system in your Connecticut home, once you claim the 30% Residential clean energy credit of $6000 (30% x $20,000 = $6000), your net cost will amount to $14,000 ($20,000- $6000 = $14,000).

Furthermore, it's important to note that if you qualify for other incentives, such as Solar Energy Equipment Sales Tax Exemption and Solar Energy System Property Tax Exemption your solar installation costs will reduce much further and you will enjoy more savings.

A reduction in your installation costs is not the only benefit you will enjoy as a Connecticut solar adopter. You will also benefit from a decrease in your monthly utility bill if you are compensated for the energy your solar energy system generates as a Residential Renewable Energy Solutions (RRES) Program participant as shown in the following computation:

If you install a solar energy system that generates a surplus of 650 kWh monthly, and select to be compensated using the Netting tariff compensation structure at a retail rate of $0.15/kWh, you will incur a reduction of $97.50 (650 kWh *$0.15/kWh = $97.50) in your monthly electric bill and a decrease of $1170 ($97.50 * 12 = $1170) in your annual electric bill.

If your solar energy system consistently generates more energy than you consume, excess credits will accumulate and be carried forward to offset future electric bills. The excess credits will result in ongoing savings over time.

By delving into these calculations, our main objective is to equip you with a transparent comprehension of the significant financial benefits that await you once you go solar. The substantial savings unveiled through these calculations illuminate the genuine economic advantages of embracing solar energy for your Connecticut home.
